Storing and freezing sperm

Sperm freezing is the process of collecting, analyzing, freezing, and storing sperm.

The samples are later used for fertility treatments. This comprehensive process is known as cryopreservation, and is sometimes referred to as sperm banking.

Sperm (reproductive cells found in a man's semen) are usually collected through masturbation. A man can choose to collect his sample at home or in a clinic, but should only use a sterile, approved lubricant that does not compromise the quality of the sample.

The cryopreservation process includes the following:

  • Routine screening for infections
  • Taking a semen sample
  • Laboratory tests to measure the quantity & quality
  • Live sperm freezing
  • Storing sperm indefinitely

Testicular sperm extraction

is a procedure in which sperm are taken directly from the testicular tissue in the male reproductive system. If a man cannot release or produce healthy sperm normally

A urologist, a doctor who specializes in the urinary tract and male reproductive organs, usually performs the procedure by making a small surgical opening in the testicle.

A surgical microscope is used to remove a small amount of tissue. Once the tissue is removed from the body, it is examined under a microscope to look for sperm. If found, the sperm can be used immediately to fertilize the egg, or the sperm can be frozen, stored, and thawed at a later time for use in infertility treatment.

What are the goals of microscopic extraction of sperm from the testicle?

  • Obtaining the best quality sperm
  • Obtaining a sufficient amount of sperm to fertilize the woman’s egg
  • Reducing damage to the reproductive organs.

Testicular biopsy

The process of taking a sample of testicular tissue is a process in which a small part of the testicle is removed for examination.

This procedure is done by making a small surgical incision in the skin of the scrotum, and a small piece of testicular tissue is removed through that incision by cutting the sample with small scissors.

This procedure is usually performed when a semen analysis indicates abnormal sperm and other tests have not identified the cause of the problem.

Varicocele removal operation time

  • surgery takes about 30 minutes for each side
  • Recovery usually takes two to three weeks
